It’s official, Tuesday March 16th is the date for the NZ Fashion Festival. So gather up your friends and get along to what looks to be a great night out in Auckland.
Our fashion family is coming out in full force and many of the designers that were present at fashion week will be showcasing their current seasons collections. Cybele, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Adrian Hailwood, Trelise Cooper, Zambesi and Huffer are part of the 16 strong lineup and also a few other non-fashion week designers like Moochi and Workshop.
It’s a treat for those who want a taste of the fashion week excitement and at only $45 per ticket, it’s cheaper than going to a fashion week designer selection show! As a bonus the New Zealand Herald Designer Garage Sale will also be making an appearance and you can shop yourself stupid buying cheap designer gear.
We are looking forward to checking it out and if you want to attend get in quick as it’s limited to only 700 tickets! Get your ticket at iTicket

Lap up the sun while you can Auckland, because it won’t be long before it’s whisked away and replaced with the nippy embrace of fall. On the upside, it means we can all start planning for our winter wadrobes!
Corinne, our latest addition to the Designer Direction team took a stroll around Auckland city and snapped Nyrene & Jade as they enjoyed the last of the summer sun.

Young designer Serena Fagence is selling off her mens and womenswear samples from NZFW; formerly known as the Air New Zealand Fashion Week, plus some summer goodies.
It’s all happening at a market day held on the corner of Dacre & France St in Newton (opposite the Kings Arms) this coming Saturday the 13th of February.
There will be fashionable finds, curios, food and music amongst other things, though we would be inclined to save our money for Serena’s fashion week samples.
Be there or be disappointed. Your wardrobe thanks you in advance.

The Mango Fashion Awards are every designers dream competition. Now in it’s third edition, the award offers the chance to not only have your work judged by some of the biggest names in fashion (last year Oscar de la Renta was on the judging panel) but the overall winner walks away with the New Zealand equivalent to just short of $600,000.
Yes, you read correctly, that’s six-hundred-thousand-dollars or 300.000 €
Last year, Jaeha Alex Kim, one of our very own was a finalist. And as the fashion-tale goes Kim may not have one his share of half a million dollars but he did secure a contract to have his garments stocked in a plethora of Mango stores overseas.
How do I enter, you ask?
The entry requirements are that you must have produced at least two womenswear collections commercially and be able to produce evidence of this, details of which are all outlined in the rules that you can download below. The next step is designing ten womenswear outfits for spring/summer 2011.
The Mango awards offer a gargantuan amount of money that could easily arm a new or emerging designer with the means to be able to launch their brand globally. Get in quick as registrations close February 28th 2010 and these must be posted.

Blaire Archibald. For Gossip Girl fans the name is a combination of two of the most fabulous characters in the Upper East but for those in the fashion know, Blaire Archibald is an up and coming designer loaded with talent and could possibly pioneer a new era for New Zealand menswear. This bright young thing is fresh out of AUT and Designer Direction sat down with him for a convo that really ran the whole gamut of things.
Of course, if you have been following DD, you probably recognise the name as Blaire has been featured multiple times in our Sure Shot section and in our AUT Rookie review. Yes, he is that terrific. And, on top of it all, he finds time to write for Designer Direction. So, who exactly is Blaire Archibald and what makes this uber talented being tick?
First and foremost, it is important to dismiss and reject any stereotypes or assumptions you hold about people involved in the fashion biz because Blaire Archibald is an immensely complex and multifaceted person. He makes it clear that he strives to be open to everything and anything and resents the image of fashion designers being ‘vegetables’ lacking any life or passion outside of their bubbles. When I ask him what he would be doing if he were not designing, he ruminates for a while and then confidently answers that he would cook. Both fashion and cuisine share the beauty of creating something from scratch.
While sipping lattes and hot chocolates, we also discuss mutual interests in foreign languages as Blaire recounts his time learning Japanese at his high school in Rotorua. It is this very high school which also instigated his passion for creating and designing garments and introduced Blaire to a new “avenue of creative thinking.” Read the rest of this entry »

I never knew I needed pantlets until Reiko Fukuda, a young style aficionado from AUT, showcased a snazzy pair in the 2009 AUT Fashion Rookie show. They were gorgeous and I had to have them. Designer Direction was fortunate enough to talk to the super stylish designer behind these sexy gems.
Hailing from Japan, Reiko Fukuda can put a creative and unexpected twist on anything. For example, her latest collection, “Mr Madame”, a sumptuous cornucopia of sheers and leather was inspired primarily by menswear. Instead of going for the usual androgyny associated with menswear-inspired collections, Reiko looked to the always delightful Alice in Wonderland, drawing on the twisted nature of the beloved tale.
So, who is this Reiko Fukuda and how can you be as marvellous as her, you ask? This Japanese-born sensation grew up in our very own garden city, Christchurch. She is well travelled and considers Antwerp her favourite destination. Reiko is also a gold medallist when it comes to procrastination and, according to many of her fellow AUT rookies, seems to pull out inspiration from nowhere just two days ahead of the due date. Reiko vehemently defends her finely honed skill for cramming insisting that she must be “into it” and that if the assignment is a chore, it is simply impossible. As a student myself, I cannot help but be in complete agreement.
The more we discuss fashion, the more I realise how much Reiko thrives on the idea and the philosophy behind a collection. For her, finding the inspiration behind a collection is both the most laborious and the most rewarding aspect of fashion design. This is not to say that the other steps in the process are easy. Reiko is convinced that one of the most commonly held misconceptions of fashion is that the industry is one non-stop glamour fest. Read the rest of this entry »
