Sherieyvonne S/S 09/10 Collection Review

sherieyvonne - Promo Shot S/S 09/10 - Russ FlattBright spark Sherieyvonne is back for another season after taking last season off. The young designer’s Summer 09 collection has fulfilled her early promise and given her growing followers the pieces they have been waiting for.

Sherie Muys caught the attention of the New Zealand fashion scene when she won the Deutz Fashion Ambassador award in 2007 with her ‘White Wash’ collection of uniquely tailored white shirts.

Sherie worked closely with Vicki Taylor of Taylor boutique as a teenager and the Summer 09 collection indicates the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. Like Taylor, Sherie uses classic tailored pieces presented with a unique twist, whether it’s a backless waistcoat or a shoulderless jacket.

Most unusually for a summer collection there is a complete and utter absence of colour. And, even more unusually, the collection loses nothing from that fact. The tailoring and cut of the garments are strong enough to stand-alone without needing complimentary colours or prints.

There’s a return to some of the shapes, which made Sherie’s ‘White Wash’ collection so popular, but it’s the introduction of sheer dresses that really make the collection. The lightness of the fabric keeps the dresses summery despite their predominantly dark colours.

Following with the trend for trousers the collection has several pant styles available. Cropped pants and harem styles are youthfully elegant while ankle length styles make an androgynous alternative to dresses for evening wear.

A small stripe is the only print in the collection and features on dresses tops and waistcoats where it highlights unusual cutting and draping techniques.

More than anything Sherie’s Summer collection shows what an accomplished and experimental pattern cutter the young AUT graduate is, we’ll be watching her closely in the seasons to come.
