Designer Direction writer Hannah McArdle caught up with this tall poppy to hear about her latest conquests.

In September 2009 Nadeesha Godamunne will be en route to Gorizia, Italy, to take part in the prestigious Mittelmoda Fashion Awards. This fashion forward graduate won a place in the competition through the Dunedin-based International ID Fashion Awards, for her innovative illustrations that created a “trick of the eye”. For her AW 09 collection, Nadeesha flexed her illustration skills to create gorgeous hand-drawn garments that were digitally printed on to triangular shift dresses. The result? A deliciously inspiring and a modern way to showcase fashion illustration.

The highly coveted Mittelmoda award is worth €10,000 with a free licence for Kaledo Style, plus three days’ training at Lectra. The runner up receives the Sistema Moda Italia Award (to the value of €5,000) for the collection showing the best research. The main sponsor, Levi’s, offer the “Levi’s Award” for the most innovative collection, combining craftsmanship with the most interesting approach to sustainability.

Other special prizes include thousands of euros for fabric experimentation (sponsored by Furla), the most “global” collection (sponsored by H&M), innovative use of “cotton, linen, and fabrics for shirts” (sponsored by Centro Lino Italiano) with a sketch prize sponsored by Kaledo and the “Clam Spirit Award”, with Clam Magazine offering advertising space in their October issue.

Design Director for H&M (Hennes And Mauritz) Margareta van den Bosch said, “I think Mittelmoda is a very interesting and well organised competition and event, that gives you a chance to meet fashion students from all over the world: to see their work from sketch to ready-made garments, and meet them and hear them talk about their work and ideas. It is also a great chance for them to show their talents and to be seen, which is very important at the beginning of your career.” Just wait until you meet Nadeesha!

Nadeesha flies to Italy at the start of September with a fan club of well wishers here in New Zealand. She is looking forward to “…meeting the other contestants and seeing if my collection is on par with what other young designers are doing from around the world. Oh, and travelling, of course!”

When asked what scares her about the prestigious awards, she eloquently responds: “The judging!”

Mittlemoda will publish the 2009 jury soon but they say that, like past years, it will comprise renowned international fashion experts, designers, journalists, brand managers and trend setters from all over the world.

Ms Godamunne offers this advice to budding fashionistas: “Take a chance with every opportunity. I wasn’t even going to enter Emerging Designer – but look where it got me. Enter everything, get those contacts, and keep trying till you get what you want!”

The Mittelmoda Fashion Award prize-giving takes place on Friday, September 11, and the whole team here at Designer Direction eagerly await the results. Best of luck Nadeesha!

Nadeesha is currently pursuing postgraduate study at AUT, and is engrossed in her passion for fashion illustration – check out her work below.
