The Fashion Chronicles – ANZFW Day One

Hannah McArdle of www.aychblog.com and Amanda Haxton from www.fashionbehindthescenes.com fill you in their daily activities and the ins and outs of fashion week.

ANZFW kicked off fashionably on Monday night with generous amounts of bubbly flowing. Hannah headed off to the Lonely Hearts installation at Process PR showroom in Grey Lynn and was SO excited to be joined by DD editor Mel and right hand man Jason with photographer extraordinaire Tux Hika.

Cybele

ANZFW gave us a sleep in Tuesday morning with Cybele first up at 11 am. What a way to start the week! Cybele Wiren knocked our socks of with a walk through her ethereal AW 2010 collection entitled ‘Virtue’. Hannah has fallen in LOVE with the way Cybele explores the formality of the Victorian period and “pure sculptural qualities of flowers and insects”. Delicious.

Sable and Minx struggled to follow such an amazing show – but designer Theresa Brady made a proud walk to the end of the runway and was spotted later in the day with supporters enjoying the afternoon Viaduct sun.

The joint show that featured Twenty Seven Names and Juliette Hogan was probably one of the most successful joint shows either of us has ever attended – kick ass music, a slightly smaller crowd, FUN garments, attitude galore and well executed design. [Check in later in the day for Amanda’s review of the show!]

NZNTM contestants Ajoh Victoria and Laura featured in today’s shows but still on the look out for season one winner Christobelle. Amanda thought Ajoh really showed she was a strong walker in the Basquesse show, especially compared to the near limping walks from some models at Sable and Minx.

Sable & Minx

Annah Stretton woooed her crowed today with ice creams delivered to seats – as did Sable and Minx with cupcakes – a trend developing?

The Diet Coke Little Black Dress show offered a taste of things to come showing three-piece collections from ten Kiwi and Aussie designers. AdrianHailwood was a crowd favourite with his seemingly impossible sculptured dresses. Everyone left saying how much his style had changed and wondering what was in store for his show later this week.

Keisha Castle Hughes was out and about at fashion week again, likely wearing Liz Mitchell, who she calls her personal dress maker. By the time LBD came along she was on to at least her second outfit, having changed from flirty and floral at Sable and Minx, to a darker more sophisticated look in honour of the Little Black Dress.

Zambesi wrapped up day #1 of ANZFW with a stage show at Sky City Theatre. Models walked across a catwalk of light while they were projected onto the backdrop. A magical and mesmerizing end to the night in true Zambesi layered, long, khaki and docs style.

Hannah’s trend for the day:CHIFFON! Really excited by long sleek silhouettes and this delicate fabric – I love layering such light garments – easy to run around while looking fashionable without the weight of chunky knits on my shoulders! Nude heels also made a strong impression.

Amanda’s Trend of the day:Up-Do’s, I’m talking hairstyles. Despite GHD being a sponsor straightening seems to be out. Hair was up, tousled and textured; very turn of the 20th century ‘Gibson girl’ style at Sable and Minx. And more ‘dishevelled ballerina’ at Juliette Hogan.

Favourite show: 27 Names, loved their new darker look and the John Lennon style glasses.
