The SS10 Monster: Trend Report Part 4

In a dark, cobwebby corner of my room where the paint on the walls have thinned from years of furniture chaffing, a mysterious chest with a musty odour sits and listens to my silent pleas to return to childhood. Of course, I refer not to some gothic treasure trove of spooky skeletons from my past, but rather, my dearly beloved dressup box. It is full of long pearl necklaces, large floppy hats which have gotten floppier with age, big clunky heeled shoes, colourful stripy socks, floral dresses and printed blouses.

Well, it looks like I may need to give the old chest a good dusting as designers have fallen head over heels for child-like trends, trends conjuring up those days where your five year old self decided you would be Mrs Jones for the day – a civilised lady who drank tea and wore giant hats. Well darling, it looks like you can be Mrs Jones all over again, of course, with a few haute couture flourishes.

Heart this, Print that

Hearts and child-like prints were everywhere this season. I fell head over heels for Luella’s heart cut out dress which was also sported by ‘it’ girl Alexa Chung.

My favourite print was undoubtedly Miu Miu’s; nude lounging bodies and cat and bird and dog prints were all part of the package. On a random side note, how is it that Miu Miu was this fabulous when Prada was so terribly lacklustre?

And Henry Holland of House of Holland, ever the conceptual intellectual, decided to go for … wait for it… houses. Genius.

Our very own Karen Walker also rocked the trend with seagull print pants tying into the oceanfront theme. Eek, me wants!

Sock it up!

So, it is official. The powers that be have declared that socks and heels are no longer fashion sin, but are, in fact, the newest fashion trend for SS10.

Both Alexander Wang and Alexandre Herchcovitch found inspiration in American football with Wang going for grey knee highs while Herchcovitch opted for a more literal interpretation with his off-white woollies.

Hermès also took the sporty route, a popular theme this season, and featured these shorter puppies.

Both Anna Sui and Betsey Johnson decided to create schoolgirlish coquettry through their simple knee high socks.

Of course, leave it to John Galliano to teach the others how to do real sock glam à la Christian Dior with his sexy and sparkly ankle socks.

Speaking of sexy, this trend seems to be catching on even with the young Hollywood élite with America’s sweetheart, Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester featured here socking up the red carpent attention.

So, while you’re only young once, this season, you can be a child all over again with prints, hearts and socks and heels galore. As for me, I’m just going to go rummage through that chest. Don’t forget to come back for more trend spotting! Ciao darlings!
