Fashion + Art = Paint Your Heart Out

Ruby Boutique Auckland - Alex JiangIt was as if Nana’s sitting room had taken up residence in Newmarket’s Teed Street last night when Ruby Boutique held their “Paint Your Heart Out” evening at their Auckland boutique.

The store was bedecked with wreaths of pastel flowers and antique teacups, and guests were sipping Monteiths apple cider rather than the usual obligatory champagne and Vitamin Water. Combined with the delicate club sandwiches, which filled tiered cake stands, it was the entire perfect compliment to the pretty parlour room style of the Ruby store. All it lacked was a few souvenir teaspoons and a fat Corgi dog.

It was all in aid of the “Paint Your Heart Out” exhibition, which explores the relationship between art and fashion, and coincides with a revival in fashion Illustration. Ruby Boutiques in both Wellington and Auckland are selling and displaying limited edition works from three talented illustrators; Henrietta Harris, Kelly Thompson and Shayna Quinn.

Henrietta Harris is well known for her cover work for several local acts like the Mint Chicks and Cut Off Your Hands. Her work is the black sheep of the three with her kooky grungy style.

Kelly Thompson however is all about glamour with her bright and sexy 80’s style fashion illustrations. This is the second time the Wellington artist has collaborated with a fashion label, having designed a limited edition t-shirt for Crowded Elevator earlier in the year.

Shayna Quinn’s work falls somewhere in between the two, her intricate pen and ink drawings capture the spirit of the indie girls she portrays.

As I arrived the band, appropriately named ‘Teacups’, were on their second set. They were apparently one teacup short of a tea set that evening but only those in the know would have guessed as they effortlessly serenaded the browsing guests.

And a lucky few did more than just browse quickly snapping up the prints, a bargain, all at only $100. Limited editions are available, with just 30 copies of each of the nine prints so get into a Ruby Boutique quick to own your own piece of fashion illustration.
