RAFW Runway Report: Kirrily Johnston Spring/Summer 2010

Tribal prints? Check. Tall turbans? Yep. Fringed edges? Yessiree. Kirrily Johnston was all Apocalypto’d up in her latest collection, a storm of easy-fitting clothing and wicked funky accessories. Ever the visionary but also a pragmatist, her collection pushed boundaries but remained thoroughly wearable.

Key pieces included light shrugs with uneven edges, which looked perfect for a nice summer evening. Featured in stripes and slick black with gatherings, the shrugs would most probably also prove to be a super versatile piece.

Of course, I would be evading any relevant talk of her show altogether if I failed to mention her stunning dresses. The lines were clean and simple and the fabrics were generally either a solid hue coupled with faded gold embellishments, or striped.

Johnston’s girls were also not lacking in the accessories department. The very first model looked three metres tall with her elongated, fringed turban – perhaps I should also employ this tactic seeing as I am an actual short person? Oh, and those braided hair hoops? Ingenious. They reminded me a little bit of like a variation on Princess Leia but only in the best possible way, I assure you!

In short, a delicious collection with both eye-catching prints and simple looks perfect for summer. It was a rare combination of inspired yet practical creations and will no doubt fly off the shelves!
