RAFW Runway Report: Miss Unkon Spring/Summer 2010
‘Congratulations’ goes to Miss Unkon for being the only show during the week I attended to run on time. In fact, I only got there in the nick of time after having been momentarily distracted by the reality TV spectacle outside that was AusNTM on my walk to the Cargo Theatre. You won’t believe how much production goes into simply filming the girls getting out of the cars and jumping in excitement about the day ahead.
Stepping into the show at Miss Unkon, I was taken back to my childhood. Mobiles hung from the ceiling with dangling clouds and spirals and the whole venue was permeated with pink and purple. The beautiful rhythmic gymnastics opening the show set the tone for the carefree collection inspired by the captivation of young love.
Subtle frills and understated ruffle detailing were a definite trend at RAFW 2010 but the idea at Miss Unkon was, ruffles, ruffles and more ruffles. There was no such thing as being too girly in this show. One dress layered in delightful peach, orange and pink ice cream shades hugged the body with cute exaggerated ruffles.
The pieces on the runway flittered between girly innocence and farm girl charm. The floral prints and denim shorts on display captured the carefree country lifestyle perfectly. The brown leather satchel accompanying the floral print cut out dress even had layers of leaves decorating it.
The baby pinks, blues and dreamland patterns on display reminded me of ‘90s Barbie dolls. Coupled with sheer chiffons and silks, this captured memories of playing dress-ups and having tea parties at an age when problems in life were far removed and far away.
Miss Unkon was noted for its playfulness and it was charming to see the models smiling and swaying down the runway as if there was nowhere else they would rather be. I too had few places I would rather be at that time and I must say, the Miss Unkon collection brought a smile to my face on a day filled with the sad realisation that Fashion Week was ending.
